about

Ariel Tonkel was and will always be a dear friend of mine. We became friends over a shared sense of ethics and mutual appreciation of each other's own creative work. She touched my life deeply as an artist, an activist, and one of the the most generous and supportive friends I have ever had. She was also hilarious, irreverent without ever being cruel, and had the most disarming cackle. We were a two-person mutual empowerment collective, and we became chosen family. In her last months of life our friendship grew especially close, and her transition from this realm has left me devastated.

This music is intended as a loving tribute and offering to Ariel, and as comfort to everyone touched by her or by her work. Sending her love forever in this and all realms.

I recorded these pieces the day after I got home from her funeral and celebration with her family and coven in Ohio. Both pieces had been in process, and I planned to play them in some form at her funeral as she had requested. While I was recording them I felt a sense of being guided by her, that my musical arrows were being directed to their targets.

This is not the only music I have made inspired by my brilliant and magical friend, and I'm sure it won't be the last. But these 'songs' feel of a piece, and reflect accurately how I'm feeling at the moment, so I wanted to share them as a 'single' or EP.

In the spirit of Ariel, who as an activist donated money from her profound visual art to organizations supporting Black lives, reproductive freedom, trans rights, and more, I am donating 60% of any and all sales from this EP to Ariel's fundraiser (see below) while it is active, and to other CF-related organizations she supported thereafter.

"Cherish the breath you just took," as Ariel said.

About Ariel:
There is an active fundraiser to help with some medical expenses: gofund.me/46b5be12

And here are some great videos of Ariel explaining her situation and her struggles with the medical system, and for her own autonomy:
